Radiography
and Ultrasound Scanning
The imaging room
houses our advanced high output x-ray machine as well as our state of the
art ultrasound scanner. Both prove invaluable in investigating disease and
injury in our patients.
Radiography (x-ray) is often the first imaging technique we employ and it
gives us a very good overview of bone and soft-tissue structures. Ultrasound,
on the other hand can give us much more detailed information about internal
organs. Both of these procedures are non-invasive and can give immediate answers
about how to proceed with a clinical problem. Generally ultrasound scanning
is carried out without sedation.
However,
occasionally it is much more pleasant for the patients if we lightly sedate
them. Radiography, because we need to keep animals completely still while
we expose the x-ray plates and also have a legal obligation not to expose
humans to the risk of unnecessary radiation by holding our patients, is normally
carried out under deep sedation or light general anaesthesia.
Electrocardiography ECG
readings are being used more and more in our practice in the routine assessment
of animals with potential heart disease or as part of a general health check
in our more senior patients. It gives a visual graph of the transmission of
electrical impulses through the heart muscle and, combined with radiography
and ultrasound scanning, it is invaluable in the management of cardiac cases.
With the help of visiting consultant specialists to our clinic this is an
area, which we hope to develop in the months and years ahead.
